An Equal Music
An Equal Music by Vikram Seth

ENGLISH FURTHER DOWN

IN ENGLISH

It took some effort to get hold of the book in the library, but eventually the library just around the corner offered the book.
I read it in English, big and heavy and not convenient to carry with me in a bag. Yet I read mostly during train trips. The book is suitable for lots of short reading time. It consists of 8 parts, with very short chapters. Some hardly more than a paragraph.

My relationship with the book was one of hatred and love. On the one hand I wanted to read and read and read, on the other hand, I was really bored during some chapters. Emotions like hate and love and especially forming and breaking relationships is precisely what the book is about. The main character Michael has quite impulsive and extreme emotions. These emotions makes that he’s very into his music, on the other hand these emotions make him almost heartless in his relationship with friends and family.
The book tells about four of his relationships: the relationship between Michael and Julia: his first love, the relationship between Michael and his violin (a Tonino, on loan from a neighbor from his childhood), the relationship between the members of the Maggiore string quartette and the relationship Michael has with himself. Michael is often depressed and that is reflected in all his relationships.

My love for the book was triggered by the music. The love of the musicians for their music. The feeling that music creates is something I do not often read about, but what is very recognizable and in a strange way during all those train journeys created some funny feeling of silence. My hate goes to Michael and his forbidden relationship with Julia. Unstable, numb, desperate. It didn’t create a feeling of silence, but made me angry.

The strange thing is that hate and love created some balance in the book. Therefore my final opinion is fairly neutral: equal?
